The first reduction since Solana’s launch shortens the block-production period for validators and starts an epoch-by-epoch transition toward a 200-millisecond target.

Solana has activated a mainnet update that reduces its target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, marking the network’s first such reduction since launch.

The update reduces the time available for leaders to produce blocks and aims to provide users with quicker transaction confirmations. Solana’s explorer lists the SIMD-0525 feature as active on Mainnet Beta at slot 440,208,000 during epoch 1019.

For validators, the update begins a phased transition instead of an immediate move to the planned 200-millisecond target. Each further 50-millisecond reduction will take effect through a separate feature gate in a later epoch, giving the network an option to pause if block skip rates increase.

Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, described the move on Friday as Solana’s first slot-time reduction and said the network’s next target is 300 milliseconds.

Four Feature Gates Could Bring Solana Slots Down to 200 Milliseconds#

Solana’s approved rollout reduces the slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350, followed by 300, 250 and ultimately 200 milliseconds. The Solana Foundation says the network will hold off on each subsequent reduction if block skip rates become too high.

Shorter slots reduce the time leaders have to complete blocks, allow the next leader to receive transactions through Gulf Stream, and give other validators less time to replay and vote on blocks. Solana said improvements to its validator clients, particularly Turbine and Replay, made the rollout possible.

The upgrade leaves the number of ticks per slot, the four-slot leader span and the number of slots in each epoch unchanged. Since those slots now occur more quickly, validators progress through epochs in less overall time.

Solana classifies the broader upgrade as a breaking change, while the required indexing adjustments have yet to be finalized. Its documentation still lists the default slot duration at 400 milliseconds, although the explorer shows the initial 350-millisecond feature as active.

Anza’s tentative Agave v4.2 roadmap targets mainnet activation for all four phased reductions. The Solana upgrade page does not provide a calendar date or specific epoch for the 300-millisecond stage, and the network will hold off on that reduction if block skip rates become too high.
